Just over 11 years ago, my husband and I took a momentous decision over the course of a weekend in February. That was for me to take the early retirement that was being 'offered', suggested, encouraged as the world went through a different type of crisis and savage cuts were being made in local government where I had been working for over 20 years.
I began to write a blog soon after we had taken the decision that we'd make a move from Huddersfield to Spain with our then, still young children. I called it 'Moving On'. Eventually, we made it to Spain, we spent around 18 months looking for our home and when we found it, I changed my blog name to 'Being Here'. (I no longer keep it up to date.)
After settling in to life in our adopted town, we've had a very good time here, all in all. The usual ups and downs of any family, but a happy period on the whole, without doubt.
The news of the new and rapidly spreading Coronavirus came to our ears in late January, early February but it wasn't until Friday 13th March that it hit home ...and hard. All my work had to stop. I have been teaching English here for over 10 years and for the past two and a half, I've shared a glorious studio space with a Yoga teaching friend, where I have taught English and Art and Zentangle. And on that day, it all had to end.
It has been a quite a painful process to remove all my materials and try and squish them into my home...how much I have accumulated in two years is unbelievable! My partner, Angeli is going to continue in Meraki Studio Alcalá, where she teaches yoga. I wish her every success as she continues her classes from the wonderful relaxing space she has created there.
Within a few days, I had started teaching Instagram classes following a discussion with other CZTs in Spain and Alicia Gutierrez Rey's lead. We drew up a timetable and just got on with it!
And having discovered online teaching I am so surprised to discover I love it! You may have picked up that I am an extrovert and love to talk...should I confess that I rather like my 'captive' audience?? Yes, I do! What could be better than having the opportunity to teach the thing I love with a passion - Zentangle - and do that to others who either share the passion or are just discovering it? I have been blown away by the amazing tiles that people have produced following one of my classes - I've already blogged about this - but I am in awe of some of the art that is shared back to me in the hours, days and even weeks that follow a class. And from the feedback I've received, for some people, have managed to light a spark, shine a light of explanation or just guide them through the steps of creating a tangle.
And then the magic happened... I had a few requests for private classes. I was so happy! With my little ChromeBook, a mobile phone, some sticky tape (truly) I managed to organise some Zoom classes and people signed up and joined. What fun it was, what an eyeopener for the future of teaching Zentangle!
Within a few weeks, I had committed myself to pushing forward with a website idea that I had been messing around with for several months. My learning curve has been steep but here it is, functioning and helping me managed and organise the increasing number of courses and classes that I am able to to offer. And thank you all for joining me here, reading, checking out classes and generally being a presence online with me.
We are living in greatly changed circumstances, where our social interaction may be reduced or affected for some time. And yet, during the period of lockdown, I have an increased social circle, I have met people online that I seem to have instantly connected with, I've learned new skills and I've discovered the wonders and frustrations of online working. If you have found me via Instagram, where I have been doing three free classes a week, or via Facebook, where my drawings have been shared or tagged or by accident on the world wide web, I can only say how delighted I am to have had the opportunity to find you too!
Circumstances have forced me to change direction, but ever the optimist, I believe this is a good thing. My plans to return to the UK for a few years with my daughter as she takes up a place to study music in a Sixth Form in Liverpool may be still rather hazy, but I had always hoped to continue teaching Zentangle when I arrived there. Now I know I can continue from anywhere I have internet connection. I will also continue to do my classes in two languages, English and Spanish.. (or should that be three...don't we all speak Zentangle?) Good for me and good for keeping my Spanish connections strong while I am away.

It's a hard job to sell oneself..I don't like it but if I am to continue teaching online, then it is part and parcel of the process. Estamos viviendo en circunstancias muy cambiantes, donde nuestra interacción social puede verse reducida o afectada por algún tiempo. Y, sin embargo, durante el estado de alarma, he aumentado el círculo social, he conocido personas en línea con las que parezco haberme conectado instantáneamente, he aprendido nuevas habilidades y he descubierto las maravillas y las frustraciones del trabajo en línea.
