Another crazy month! From planning to come to the UK at the beginning of September, because of a number of events in early August, not least that the British Government suddenly required travellers from Spain to self-isolate for two weeks, we decided to make our move earlier. We arrived on August 15th and have now done our two weeks isolation at my sister's beautiful barn conversion.
I have carried on teaching my lovely Chinese students and tried to ignore the relentless rain that fell from the day after our arrival until yesterday. And yesterday was our first day of 'freedom', so Romy and I went up to visit Liverpool - although we had already decided to investigate an area across the Mersey first. And we absolutely fell in love with Wallasey Village! Not only did the Estate Agent take us under her wing, drawing what is a quite a small circle on a map where we can look for a place to rent, but when we had to wait a little while to have lunch in a beautiful little cafe called 'Stollies' on the main street, we were treated to a complimentary cappuccino which was arguably the very best I have ever had! Good sign!
The housing market has gone absolutely crazy - I don't know if it's the same everywhere but in Merseyside, everyone seems to be moving house! Rentals are being snapped up within hours and the competition for houses is pushing prices up and up...truly unusual times. So, we are trying not to get too excited because the property we really wanted to visit is occupied until the end of September and can't be viewed at the moment. This is GOOD, because I'm not in a position to act quickly until my teaching finishes. So cross fingers, legs, eyes and anything else that we are lucky and find a nice place that is both accessible to Liverpool and safe and pleasant to live in.
And Romy has her first day tomorrow! She's far too cool about it, whereas I am super-excited! I'm sure to tell you more when she's been and started classes for real next week but just to have got her here and ready to go feels like a huge achievement - from a vague idea to the actuality has been a rollercoaster ride. The rest is up to her now.
It's wonderful to have spent some time with my sister. We went for a long windy walk on the beach at New Brighton in the Wirral yesterday afternoon with her three dogs. For anyone outside the UK, the Wirral is just north west of Liverpool on a sort of rectangle of land that is access directly from Liverpool by tunnel or by the famous Mersey Ferry. It is possible to get to it via road from the south to but a ferry is sort of a cool feature. Wallasey Village is a small town to the north of this area and just a stone's throw from the beach. Check out the map below for a bit of geographical information (if you're interested!) And although it doesn't actually say 'LIVERPOOL' on the map here, the city itself is where the yellow line meets the land. Edge Hill is an area. North West coast and the little bit of land at the bottom left is North Wales.
Liverpool itself is an amazing and exciting city - not too big, lots going on, with the docks, the River Mersey, lots of (dubious) history, the Beatles, Chinatown, lots of music, independent and interesting shops....last time we were there, we did wonder why people both going to London when they could come to Liverpool!
On the tangling front, I am hoping to work with my nephew to improve my website and access to my weekly NowZen classes - perhaps through the Members pages. My next NowANDZen workshop is on Friday 11th September and can be attended live via a Zoom link if you wanted or via a recording at your own time. I have had so many requests to do maptangling that it will be one of the focuses of this workshop but I am also preparing a two and a half hour class to demonstrate my own version of this type of tangling as I'm sure everyone will do it slightly differently. I love this technique - and the coffee/wine/fruit stain options too. I do hope you'll decide to join me - watch out for more information for the first of these workshops in October!
